About Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD)
TMD or TMJ involves difficulty in chewing, clicking, or locking the jaw followed by neck pain, headaches, and ringing in the ears.
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction can be caused by:
- Past trauma to the jaw: sports, car accidents, or other such scenarios.
- Bruxism or teeth grinding.
- Dental issues like the poor alignment of teeth
- Repetitive stress to the jaw (can be caused by frequent gum chewing or nail-biting)
The symptoms of TMD can be temporary or long-lasting, jaw pain being the most common symptom. You may also experience headaches and dizziness, difficulty opening your mouth fully, jaw pain, tinnitus, neck pain, and locking jaw.
Physical therapy can alleviate TMD using manual therapy techniques, targeted stretching and strengthening of joints, and postural correction. Physical therapy focuses on relaxing, releasing, and stretching the scar tissue and tight muscles.
